Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Trains U.S.
Special Forces
The 1st Special Forces Group
(Airborne) of the U.S. Army
recently spent two weeks in training
with Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Defensive
Tactics Training Systems. The
training, held on 25 September 2005
to 7 October 2005 at Fort Lewis (WA), covered
less-than-lethal combatives for the
non-compliant operating environment.
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Directors Tony
Grano and Don Roberts conducted the
training, which included
Mechanical Advantage Subject
Control, Survival Force Reactionary
Defense, and Combative Counter
Measures. Soldiers from the Fort
Lewis Military Police were also in
attendance.

Each level of the Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. System corresponds to an
increased threat level: from Passive
Resistance to Deadly Attack. While
the system as a whole emphasizes
non-lethal control and defense
tactics, Combative Counter Measures
contains a force escalation
component to lethal force tactics.

CF3
Debut Overwhelming Success
On July 18-22, over fifteen law
enforcement officers from agencies
throughout New Mexico and other
states participated in the debut
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Level 3 course
in Farmington, NM. In addition to
becoming instructor certified in the
advanced survival tactics of Level
3: Combative Counter Measures,
participants also renewed their
Level 1 & 2 instructor
certifications. The response from
the class was positive, with
officers surprised at how quickly
they were able to pick up the
advanced survival tactics and how
practically the techniques fit in
with their previous training.
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. 3 had been in
development for over two years
before making its debut in July.
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Directors Tony
Grano and Don Roberts began working
on an advanced level of defensive
tactics in response to increased
demand from Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
certified instructors. “Many of our
certified instructors were getting
to the point of renewing their
certifications for the third or
fourth time, and they needed
something new to bring back to their
departments,” notes Roberts on the
need for a new level of Controlled
F.O.R.C.E.
In developing a counter measures
training program, the Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. Development Team needed
to come up with solutions to the
ground-fighting puzzle and answers
to the questions “how do I avoid
being taken to the ground” and “how
do I survive if I am taken down.” To
help solve this puzzle, Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. teamed with UFC Champion
Pat Miletich. “Our certified
instructors have come to expect only
the best from Controlled
F.O.R.C.E.,” explains Grano, “so
when it came time to build a new
level of combatives training, we
knew we had to pull out all the
stops.” Grano cites Miletich’s
legendary fighting performance and
extensive experience in training law
enforcement and military
organizations as the main reasons
for joining together. On top of
that, Grano notes that Pat is just
an all around good guy who genuinely
cares about the safety of the men
and women protecting our streets and
fighting abroad for our Nation’s
security.

Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Team from left
to right:
Tony Grano, Pat Miletich, Don
Roberts
To follow up on the success of Level
3 in New Mexico, Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. has scheduled a course
for November at the Ingham County
Sheriff’s Office in Michigan.
Officers interested in taking a
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Level 3 course
should note that instructor
certification in Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. Levels 1 & 2 is required.
“While these are advanced tactics,”
states Roberts, “they build upon and
refer back to the concepts and
techniques of Levels 1 & 2, making
certification in those programs
necessary.” For more information,
see our
National
Training Schedule.

U.S. Marines SOTG to Host Course
The U.S. Marines Special Operations
Training Group (SOTG) out of Camp
Lejuene, NC will be hosting an
Instructor Certification Course in
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Levels 1 & 2
on May 23-27. The SOTG has opened
this course to all military and law
enforcement personnel. Interested
persons should contact Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. at 630-365-1700 for more
information.
During the week of May 23-27, the
SOTG instructor team and everyone
else in attendance will earn
Instructor Certification in the 10
Defensive Tactics Training
Categories of Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
Levels 1 & 2. Upon completion,
attendees will have a thorough
knowledge of the Mechanical
Advantage Control Holds™ (M.A.C.H.)
and will be able to apply those
holds in any confrontational
situation.
In addition to learning the
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. comprehensive
system of personal defense with
arrest and detainment options,
attendees will receive instructor
development training. The main goal
of all Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
Instructor Certification Courses is
to improve the student’s ability to
teach defensive tactics to his/her
department’s officers.
Utilizing a variety of techniques
developed through years of combined
training experience, the Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. system of instructor
development helps the student
identify and address the different
types of learners one will encounter
in class. Armed with these skills,
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. certified
instructors are able to teach any
defense technique
and successfully get the information
across to every student.
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. instructor
development techniques make students
better trainers of all defensive
tactics training systems, not just
of Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Many
officers who have been certified in
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. have stated
that the training not only
integrated seamlessly with the other
systems they already used (including
PPCT) but also made them better at
performing and teaching those
systems.
If you are interested in improving
your instructor skills but cannot
attend the course at Camp Lejuene,
please see our
National Training Schedule to
find a course in your area.

Biloxi PD Hosts Instructor Course
On February 21-25, the Biloxi,
Mississippi Police Department hosted
a Controlled F.O.R.C.E. and Survival
F.O.R.C.E. Instructor Certification
Course. The training was attended by
officers from the Biloxi Police
Department and several surrounding
agencies.
As in all Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
courses, the first day was spent
developing the officers’
understanding of body movement,
reaction, and leverage using Body
Positioning Drills. When the
officers completed these exercises,
the class began learning the five
Mechanical Advantage Control Holds
(M.A.C.H.), which are the building
blocks of the Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
System.
Over the next two days, the class
incorporated takedowns to a
handcuffing position, baton,
teamwork tactics, and weapon
retention to complete the system of
Mechanical Advantage Subject
Control.
After lunch on the third day, the
class started Survival F.O.R.C.E.
reactionary training. Officers
learned to survive a surprise attack
and then to transition to control
tactics or disengage and escalate
force. By the last day of class, the
officers were able to move fluidly
through the M.A.C.H. techniques and
to transition between Survival
F.O.R.C.E. and Controlled
F.O.R.C.E., giving them a pliable
set of manual control tactics to use
in any confrontation.
In addition to becoming proficient
in using both systems, all officers
received instructor development to
effectively teach the techniques of
both systems to their respective
departments. At the end of the week,
all officers who completed both
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. and Survival
F.O.R.C.E. earned instructor
certifications in 10 categories of
controlled defense.
While most officers in attendance
were taking the course for the first
time, there were several officers
there to re-new their instructor
certifications. Having trained and
used the system in their own
departments, these officers were
able to provide some insight into
the value of the system.
One officer commented that “PPCT has
got [him] sued before,” comparing
the low liability joint manipulation
techniques of Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
to the pressure point tactics of
PPCT. Another officer was a little
more general in his comparison,
stating that Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
is “the best hand to hand class that
I have ever been to.” All praise
aside, the officers who attended the
course in Biloxi, MS are now better
prepared to perform their duties
with increased safety to themselves
and to anyone they may have to go
hands-on with.
To find a course similar to this
in your area, please see our
National Training Schedule.

Introducing Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
3
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Training
Systems proudly introduces its next
level of training: Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. III Combative Counter
Measures. Level 3 is an advanced
survival course that teaches
officers what to do when confronted
and attacked by a professionally
trained assailant. Level 3
builds on the techniques learned in
Levels 1 & 2, and can revert back to
those tactics at any time. For more
information on Controlled F.O.R.C.E.
III, please see our
Training
page.
With the addition of Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. III, we have
re-structured our entire system to
create more cohesion between each
program. The changes are as follows:
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. is now
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. I - Mechanical
Advantage Subject Control
Survival F.O.R.C.E. is now
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. II - Survival
Force Reactionary Defense
And the new program is Controlled
F.O.R.C.E. III - Combative Counter
Measures
This new structure does not affect
any pre-existing certifications in
Controlled F.O.R.C.E. or Survival
F.O.R.C.E. Also, materials received
from courses already completed or
courses yet to be completed may not
reflect these new titles. As the
actual training is unchanged, we
will continue using our current
supply of course materials until we
reach a suitable time for a complete
system update.
